The Speedcubing Roadmap

Five stages from complete beginner to WCA competition. Each stage has clear time goals, detailed content, and a progress checklist.

Beginner Method

2:00 → 1:00

Start here if you've never solved a Rubik's Cube. Learn how the cube works, basic notation, and the 7-step layer-by-layer beginner method. By the end of this stage, you'll consistently solve the cube in under 1 minute.

Goal: Consistently solve under 1:00

2-Look CFOP

1:00 → 0:30

CFOP is the method used by all world record holders. 2-Look CFOP is the beginner-friendly version — you learn the same four steps (Cross, F2L, OLL, PLL) but split the last layer into two 'looks' each, requiring only 16 algorithms total. This stage takes you from 1 minute to 30 seconds.

Goal: Consistently solve under 0:30

Full CFOP

0:30 → 0:20

Full CFOP means doing OLL and PLL in one 'look' each — recognizing the case and executing the algorithm instantly. This requires learning 57 OLL algorithms and 21 PLL algorithms (78 total). Combined with improved cross, F2L, and lookahead, this takes you to sub-20.

Goal: Consistently solve under 0:20

Optimized CFOP

0:20 → 0:15

Breaking sub-15 requires optimizing every part of your solve. This means planning cross AND first F2L pair during inspection, developing instant OLL/PLL recognition, increasing your TPS to 5+, and beginning color neutrality. These techniques separate casual speedcubers from serious competitors.

You can solve the cube fast. Now it's time to prove it at a WCA competition. This stage covers WCA rules, competition day logistics, managing nerves, and what to expect. Your first competition is about the experience — not winning.
