The 2x2 Speedcubing Roadmap

Three stages from complete beginner to WCA 2x2 competition. Each stage has clear time goals, detailed content, and a progress checklist.

Beginner Method (2x2)

1:00 → 0:20

The 2x2 is a simpler cube than the 3x3 — only 8 corners, no edges, no centers. The beginner method solves it in 3 steps: first layer, orient last layer (OLL), permute last layer (PLL). With just 3 algorithms, you can solve the 2x2 in under 20 seconds.

Goal: Consistently solve under 0:20

Ortega Method

0:20 → 0:05

Ortega is the standard intermediate 2x2 method. It solves the cube in 3 steps: solve the first layer (intuitive), orient both layers simultaneously (OLL, 7 algorithms), and permute both layers at once (PBL, 5 algorithms). With 12 algorithms total, Ortega takes you from 20 seconds down to 5 seconds.

Goal: Consistently solve under 0:05

You can solve the 2x2 in under 5 seconds with Ortega. Now it is time to compete. This stage covers WCA 2x2 rules, competition strategy, and introduces advanced methods (CLL and EG) for those who want to push sub-3.
